Southern Illinois Signs David Nick
MARION, ILL. (APRIL 1, 2014) -The Southern Illinois Miners announce that they have added infielder David Nick to their roster. Nick joins the Miners following five years with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.
Nick was originally drafted from Cypress (CA) High School in the fourth round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, where he had been named to several national High School All-America teams including Baseball America, Perfect Game USA, Rawlings, Louisville Slugger and Under Armour.
Nick has seen great success throughout the D'Backs system. He was an all-star in the Pioneer League in 2009 when he hit .286 with 18 doubles, three triples and six home runs while being named by Baseball America as one of the league's top-20 prospects. His most successful season was another all-star season with High-A Visalia in 2011 when he hit .300 with 35 doubles, five triples and 13 home runs, driving in 68.
In the fall of 2011, David was chosen by the Diamondbacks to be one of the few prospects sent to the prestigious Arizona Fall League where some of baseball's top prospects go to hone their skills. He went on to hit .298 with nine doubles. In the championship game, he singled, tripled and drove in three runs.
In 2013, splitting time between High-A in Visalia and Double-A Mobile, he hit .247 with 18 doubles, four triples and 11 home runs while driving in 49.
"David has been a successful hitter at many levels, both for average and for power," Miners manager Mike Pinto said. "He has been an all-star at a number of levels and has a championship in the Arizona Fall League. This is a great addition to the Miners and a strong piece of our lineup. He will bring leadership to the field and the clubhouse. I am very excited to have him with us."
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
