(San Jose, CA)- The Seattle Sounders defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 in a Tuesday night exhibition played at Buck Shaw Stadium in San Jose.

Goals from Kenji Treschuk and Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar were enough to come back from a 1-0 hole caused by a Ryan Cochrane header in the 40th minute.

The win was the third this season for the Sounders over MLS competition; Seattle also beat Chivas USA 2-0 on July 1 and the Kansas City Wizards 0-0 (6-5) in penalty kicks July 8 both in US Open Cup competition. It is also their third exhibition victory in the last week. The Sounders knocked off Seattle University and the University of Washington in friendlies last Tuesday and Wednesday.

Seattle will hope to ride the momentum of their win into the final four games of the USL regular season. The Sounders return to league play Saturday when the Miami FC Blues make their second and final visit to Starfire Saturday, September 6 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

The Earthquakes struck first in the 40th minute when defender Jamil Roberts got on the end of a Jovan Kirovski corner kick and headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal was overdue as San Jose had controlled much of the run of play in the early going; the corner was their sixth of the half to that point.

Seattle went into the half down 1-0 but came out at the restart eager to equalize the scoreline. It wasn't long before Kenji Treschuk put the game back on level terms in the 50th minute squaring and shooting a pass from Roger Levesque from 10 yards out.

The Sounders kept up the pressure out shooting the Earthquakes 8-3 in the second half. But San Jose dug in and looked as if they would come away with the draw before Seattle found a late winner off the foot of Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar.

Alcaraz-Cuellar, seeing his first action since going down with a calf injury in early August, scored in the 85th minute off a pass from Sebastien Le Toux. The play started with Roger Levesque on the counter attack running down the left side and passing it into Sebastien Le Toux who directed it over to Alcaraz-Cuellar who buried it in the back of the net.

The Sounders survived five minutes of stoppage time to preserve the 2-1 scoreline and come away with the victory.
