April 23, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Seattle Sounders FC News Release
RENTON, WASH. - Sounders FC today announced that it has traded defender Xavier Arreaga to the New England Revolution in exchange for a 2025 International Roster Slot, as well as up to $75,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM) if certain performance metrics are met. The Ecuadorian centerback made 120 appearances across all competitions for the Rave Green from 2019-2024, helping Seattle win the 2019 MLS Cup and 2022 Concacaf Champions League.
"On behalf of the organization, I'd like to thank Xavi and wish him nothing but the best at his next stop," said Sounders FC General Manager & Chief Soccer Officer Craig Waibel. "This transaction allows for increased flexibility within the salary cap as we explore different ways to improve our team this summer."
Arreaga came to Seattle in May of 2019 and helped Sounders FC raise the MLS Cup trophy that season, appearing in 17 matches across all competitions, including a start in the club's Western Conference Championship win at LAFC. The Guayaquil, Ecuador native started 81 of 100 total appearances in MLS regular-season action for the Rave Green, recording three goals and two assists. He was named to the 2022 Concacaf Champions League Best XI squad after starting all eight matches during Sounders FC's historic championship run. Arreaga also started all three of Seattle's matches during its runner-up finish in Leagues Cup 2021.
"I'd like to thank Xavi for all he has done for this club since coming to Seattle in 2019," said Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. "He was an important member of our team and helped us raise multiple trophies. We wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career."
Arreaga has 20 career appearances for the Ecuador National Team and was a member of La Tri's final roster at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He made nine appearances in World Cup Qualifying, scoring his lone international goal in a 6-1 win over Colombia on November 17, 2020. Prior to coming to MLS, Arreaga played for Barcelona SC of the Ecuadorian topflight, where he started 78 of 79 appearances over four seasons.
