Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, set the all-time franchise records for the longest unbeaten-in-regulation streak, 13 games at 11-0-1-1, and the longest road unbeaten streak, seven games at 6-0-1, with a 5-4 road win over the Binghamton Senators Thursday. The Sound Tigers have also won seven games in a row.
The Sound Tigers opened the scoring with 6:55 left in the first period on the first AHL goal of Graham Belak's career off an assist from Ben Guite. However, Binghamton tied the score at 1-1 1:22 later on the fifth marker of the season by Daniel Corso off assists from Denis Hamel and Alexandre Giroux.
The Sound Tigers appeared to take charge of the game with three goals in the first half of the second period. Jeff Hamilton regained the lead at 2-1 with his AHL-leading 14th goal of the season off assists from Mattias Weinhandl and Eric Manlow. Kevin Colley then made it 3-1 with his second goal in as many games, his third of the year, at the 6:23 mark. Colley's goal was unassisted. Rob Collins then increased the lead to 4-1 with his sixth goal of the season at 9:47 on the power play off assists from Manlow and Hamilton. The Collins goal increased the Sound Tigers goal-scoring streak on the advantage to seven games. It also chased starting Goaltender Ray Emery from the Binghamton net in favor of Billy Thompson.
Binghamton pulled back to within 4-2 on its fourth shorthanded goal of the season with 5:11 left in the middle frame as David Hymovitz converted a turnover into his second goal, an unassisted marker, of the season. The Senators then tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of third-period goals.
Brian McGrattan, in his first game back from a knee injury, made it 4-3 with his third goal of the season 7:49 into the third period off assists from Tony Tuzzolino and Denis Hamel, and Alexandre Giroux tied the game at 4-4 with third goal of the season off assists from Tuzzolino and Julien Vauclair with 6:50 left to play.
Cail MacLean, who was originally slated to be a scratch but played when Blaine Down fell ill just prior to the game, regained the lead at 5-4 with his first goal as a Sound Tiger with 2:41 left to play off assists from Collins and Colley. The winning goal earned MacLean the first star of the game. Hamilton was the second, and Giroux was the third.
The Sound Tigers were 1 for 5 on the power play and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill. They won despite being outshot 34-18 including a season-high 16 shots against in the first period. Dieter Kochan made 30 saves to improve his personal unbeaten-in-regulation streak to nine games at 6-0-2-1. Thompson took the loss with six saves while Emery received a no-decision with seven saves.
