Sound pulls major upset in ABA playoffs

Rochester, NY. The Strong Island Sound win their 10th consecutive game with a thrilling 128-126 double overtime victory over the top-ranked Indiana Alley Cats. The game was the first in a day-long playoff marathon entitled The Great 8 in the third round of the ABA playoffs.

Forward Gary Williams calmly sank two free throws in the sudden-death second extra period to propel the sound into the Final 4 and send Indiana home. The Sound trailed this game by 17 points in the fourth quarter before mounting their comeback. The unique 3-10-and Out ABA overtime rule was stretched to the max in this game.

After a 3-minute overtime period that still did not decide the winner, the two exhausted teams headed into double overtime. The Sound were the first team to score 10 points and were victorious in their biggest win of the season.

Double-doubles from Roberto Gittens (21 points and 13 rebounds) and "Fridge" Holeman (35 points and 12 rebounds), Gary Williams with 24 points and 9 rebounds and Chris Sandy with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists all were instrumental in the victory. Sound head coach Joe Medina kept his team fresh with important and timely substitutions.
