Strong Island Sound News Release
Patchogue, NY- The American Basketball Association has released its 2007-08 regular season schedule, which runs from November through March. The Strong Island Sound will open with a home-at-home series with the expansion Westchester Phantoms, beginning on Sunday, November 4 at Westchester. On Saturday, November 17, the two teams will tip things off at Suffolk Community College at 7:15 for the Sound's home opener.
Strong Island will continue the opening weekend homestand the following day with a 4:15 matinee versus the Jersey Express, who have moved their home games from Essex College in Newark to Drew University in Madison, hence the name change. Clarence Thompson has been hired as the new head coach of a team that is looking to rebound following a disastrous 4-22 record a year ago. They will have two local products in their frontcourt with Duquan Everett from Orange and Phillip Smith from Newark.
The Sound will then hit the road for the remainder of November to face two more new clubs at Syracuse and Halifax, Nova Scotia. On November 24, they will take on the Raging Bullz at the Onodanga County War Memorial. One Bullz player to garner attention in the ABA will be Louis McCullough, the 6'6", 220-pound forward who is the brother of the Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett and the cousin of the Los Angeles Lakers' Shammond Williams.
On the 29th of the month, the Sound will go north of the border to face the Rainmen at the Metro Center, the location of last season's ABA All-Star game. Kevin MaBone will serve as the head coach and general manager for Canada's newest professional basketball team.
December will have 10 games, five at home (Montreal, Westchester, Virginia, Delaware and Jersey), and five on the road (Delaware, Virginia, Syracuse, and Jersey twice).
To start off the new year, the Sound have eight games in January, six of them being at home versus Buffalo (two), Syracuse, Corning (two), and Boston. They will also travel to Buffalo and Corning.
February will be the last month on Strong Island's home schedule, with games against Jersey, Delaware, Halifax, Corning and Buffalo. Away games will be at Jersey, Westchester, Virginia and Delaware.
In the final month of the regular season, the Sound will be making their playoff push with four road games, at Buffalo, Corning, Delaware and finishing up on the 14th at Boston.
Sound co-owner Darren Cioffi spoke about the release of his team's new schedule, "We are excited to begin play this year against strong teams. We are looking forward to competing against strong competition."
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
