Soul sign pair of fullbacks

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Soul have signed FB's Matt Bernstein and George Layne. As per club policy, terms of their deals were not disclosed.

Bernstein (6'0", 261, Wisconsin) joins the Soul after a brief stint in the NFL with the Detroit Lions. Prior to joining the Lions while at Wisconsin, he started every game as a junior and finished third on the team with a career-high 300 rushing yards with one touchdown. He played every game as a sophomore and emerged as the starting fullback. The former Badger was a preseason All-American and All-Big Ten Conference first team selection.

Layne (5'11", 250, Texas Christian University) enters the Arena Football League with the Soul after spending four seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and briefly with the San Diego Chargers. He was signed by the Falcons. In his four year NFL career he played in 10 games and had four receptions for 20 yards and carried the ball three times for 32 yards. He spent the majority of his time blocking for Warrick Dunn. Layne was a two year starter at TCU as a fullback and was a lead blocker. He was largely responsible for creating huge holes for All-American and current Charger LaDainian Tomlinson. He finished his college career with 482 rushing yards with eight touchdowns on 97 carries.
