Soul set to begin 2006 training camp

PHILADELPHIA - In preparation for their third season of play in the 20-year-old Arena Football League, the Philadelphia Soul will open training camp on Friday, January 6.

All practice sessions will be held at either the NovaCare Complex or the Wachovia Spectrum.

"We're excited to get things started this week for the season," first-year head coach Bret Munsey said. "My objective this offseason was to bring in guys that I feel can make this organization successful and I feel I was able to do that. We look for a very competitive camp with no job being secure."

Training camp which features a scrimmage against the New York Dragons at the Wachovia Spectrum on Wednesday, January 18, will conclude on Sunday, January 22.

The Soul roster, which currently consists of 36 players, will be trimmed to the AFL's regular-season limit of 24 on Sunday, January 22.

The 2006 season kicks off on Sunday, January 29, when the Soul host the Tampa Bay Storm at the Wachovia Center. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.

Philadelphia is bringing in 24 newcomers, including 15 AFL rookies, to compete in training camp for roster spots with 12 returnees. Among the familiar faces are QB Tony Graziani, OS Marcus Knight and WR/LB Sean Scott. Graziani finished last season with 328 completions for 4,262 yards with 90 touchdowns. Knight played in 11 games and caught 64 passes for 886 yards with 23 touchdowns and Scott had 71 receptions for 798 yards with 21 scores.

The Soul finished last season with a record of 6-10 despite ranking second in the League in total offensive touchdowns (113).

Leading the way for the newcomers are AFL veterans OL/DL E.J. Burt and Ernest Allen to go along with DS Kevin Gaines. Burt recorded 7.5 sacks last year, while forcing four turnovers and was named to the All-Arena Second Team for the first time in his career. Allen recorded 4.5 tackles for losses and had two sacks last season with the Dallas Desperados. He enters his 12th season in the League and has been named to the All-Arena Second Team four times. Gaines was a Second Team All-Arena selection last season while with the Georgia Force and has 35 career interceptions, ranking him seventh all time in AFL history.

The Soul kickoff their third season in the AFL on January 29, 2006 when they host the Tampa Bay Storm at the Wachovia Center.
