
Soroka, Acuna Sweep Southern League Weekly Awards

PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves swept the Southern League's weekly honors this week, as RHP Mike Soroka and outfielder Ronald Acuna were named Southern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, May 14.
Soroka took a perfect game bid into the seventh inning of Friday night's series finale against the Mobile BayBears before surrendering a one-out single. The Braves No. 4 prospect, as ranked by Baseball America, went 6.2 innings and surrendered just one hit and a walk while fanning five. The young right-hander is 3-3 with a 2.84 ERA in seven starts on the season at Double-A Mississippi. Opponents are hitting just .187 against him. Soroka went 9-9 in 25 games for the Rome club last season, posting a 3.02 ERA. He ranked tied for third among all Braves minor leaguers in wins, fifth in total innings pitched (143.0), sixth in starters ERA and eighth in strikeouts (125). The Canadian was selected by the Braves in the first round (28th overall) of the 2015 draft.
Acuna was promoted to Double-A Mississippi on May 9. In his first week with the M-Braves, Acuna posted a .560 batting average and a .920 slugging percentage, going 14-for-25 with a double, triple, two home runs and 10 RBI. He also stole four bases. The young prospect was hitting .287 with three doubles, five triples, three homers, 19 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 28 games at High-A Florida before the promotion. As ranked by Baseball America, the Braves No. 6 prospect spent most of last season at Low-A Rome where he posted a .311 batting average with eight extra-base hits, 18 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 40 games. He also appeared in two games with the GCL Braves. A native of Venezuela, Acuna was signed by the Braves as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2014.
