Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots have signed outfielder Jan Hernandez for the 2020 season.
Hernandez enters his first season with the Somerset Patriots and his first season in the Atlantic League. The 25-year old spent the entire 2019 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia Phillies). He played in 61 games and hit .250 with 12 home runs, 44 RBI and 13 doubles. Hernandez then hit four home runs with 14 RBI over 30 games in the Puerto Rico Winter League before representing Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Series.
The San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico native spent each of the first seven seasons of his professional career in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. He has cleared double-digit home run tallies in each of his last five seasons, including a career-high 16 home runs over 90 games with High-A Clearwater in 2017 and 14 home runs with a career-best 53 RBI and a .263 batting average over 103 games with Double-A Reading in 2018.
"Jan comes highly recommended by some guys we greatly trust," said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. "Hernandez seems to be a guy who will fit in nicely with our squad. He is the type of player a team needs to be successful. Jan can play all three outfield positions well. He can also fill in at times in the infield. Jan possesses good power at the plate and he can also drive in runs. We are really excited to get our eyes on Jan when he gets in to camp. I really believe he will be even better in person than his numbers show."
Hernandez was originally a third-round draft pick by the Phillies in 2013 out of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy. He has 71 home runs, 233 RBI and 31 stolen bases over his seven-year professional career.
