Los Angeles Sol News Release

CARSON, CA - Tuesday, June 30, 2009 - The first-place Los Angeles Sol of Women's Professional Soccer has acquired defender Christie Shaner from Sky Blue FC, the club announced today. In return, Los Angeles sent Sky Blue a third round pick in the 2010 WPS draft. Shaner will fill the senior roster spot vacated by Martina Franko, who is pregnant and unable to finish the season.

The 24-year-old Shaner attended Notre Dame, where she helped the Irish capture four consecutive Big East regular season titles from 2003 to 2006. Additionally, she helped lead her team to the NCAA College Cup championship in 2004 and the championship game of the NCAA College Cup in 2006. She then played for FC Indiana in the W-League and WPSL from 2003 to 2008, where she claimed titles in 2005 and 2007. In 2009 she was selected by Sky Blue FC in the fourth round of the 2009 WPS Draft and appeared in two games totaling 40 minutes.

"I would like to thank Martina for all her time and effort with the club. We wish her all the best and look forward to her on the field again soon," General Manager Charlie Naimo said. "Christie is a solid defender that we think will provide depth on our back line."

Franko, 33, started in all 10 games she appeared in for the Sol and totaled 887 minutes. She leaves a first-place Sol team that is currently riding a 10-game undefeated streak and is the first team in WPS to clinch a playoff berth.

The Sol will travel to play the Washington Freedom this Sunday, July 5 at Maryland SoccerPlex, before returning to play their final home game of the season against Saint Louis Athletica at The Home Depot Center on Wednesday, July 8 at 12 pm.
