CARSON, CA - June 3, 2009 - The Los Angeles Sol (Women's Professional Soccer) and the Chicago Red Stars played to a dramatic 1-1 tie on a cold and cloudy Wednesday evening at The Home Depot Center.
The Sol attempted to open the scoring in the 25th minute when French International midfielder Camile Abily dribbled the ball in the box after receiving a cross from three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Marta, but was stopped point blank by Red Stars goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson.
The next best scoring opportunity for the Sol was in the 31st minute, when Marta received a pass from Japanese International midfielder Aya Miyama and shot the ball from outside the penalty area, but the ball was pushed aside by Jonsson.
After numerous chances from each side, the Red Stars got on the board in the 88th minute when Cristiane, Marta's teammate on the Brazilian National Team, scored on an assist from Ella Masar, driving the ball past Sol goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.
The Sol notched a late equalizer in the 90th minute when Marta's attempt from outside the box bounced off the left post and right to the feet of Abily, who jumped on the opportunity and scored to tie the match 1-1.
The Los Angeles Sol hosts the Washington Freedom on Sunday, June 7 at 3pm at The Home Depot Center on the Campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills. For more information or to purchase Los Angeles Sol tickets today, please call toll free at 1-877-4-SOL-TIX (476-5849) or visit www.LosAngelesSol.com.
