June 4, 2009 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) News Release
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 4, 2009) - Washington Freedom midfielder Sonia Bompastor has won the WPS Player of the Month Award for May. Bompastor led her team to a 2-0-2 record during the month, as the Freedom are in the midst of a five-game unbeaten streak dating back to April 18 that has taken the team to second in the WPS Standings behind the Los Angeles Sol. In May, Bompastor notched two goals and three assists, including a stoppage time header in the back of the net against the Saint Louis Athletica that earned Washington a tie after being two goals down late in the game. She also notched two assists in Washington's 3-1 victory over FC Gold Pride.
The award was selected by team, media and online fan voting. Each group accounts for one-third of the final tally with Bompastor sweeping all three for the first time since the WPS Player of the Month award has been given.
