Sockers Shop For After-Christmas Win Against Comets

The San Diego Sockers (7-11) will spend the day after Christmas shopping for a win, when they take on the Kansas City Comets, Thursday at 7 p.m., at the San Diego Sports Arena.

The Sockers are 2-0 against the Comets, including a 14-10 win in Kansas City on October 19 and a 22-21 win in San Diego on November 2. The Comets are currently in third place in the Western Conference of the MISL, just half a game behind the Sockers, with a 5-8 record.

Last Time: Baltimore 8 at San Diego 14 - Dec. 21, 2002

The Sockers beat the Baltimore Blast for the second time this season, 14-8 at the San Diego Sports Arena.
- Anthony Farace led the team with four goals and one assist for nine points.
- Chile Farias added to his point total with two assists.
- Nick Vorberg was in the goal for the Sockers and totaled 16 saves.

Farace Named MISL Offensive Player Of The Week San Diego forward Anthony Farace has been named the MISL Offensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending December 22. Farace receives the award after posting four 2-point goals and an assist for nine points in one outing last week.

The San Diego native recorded four of the Sockers' seven goals and participated in five of his club's tallies in leading his team to a 14-8 victory over Baltimore on December 21. Farace also notched the game-winning goal in the contest.

Farace is third on the San Diego roster with 20 points on the campaign. The 22-year-old striker is tied for second on the San Diego roster with nine goals scored in 18 outings this season.

Farias Named MISL Offensive Player Of The Month

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Forward Carlos "Chile" Farias was recently named the MISL Offensive Player of the Month for his play in the month of November.

Farias posted three 3-point goals, seven 2-point tallies, seven assists and 30 points in six November outings. The native of Santiago, Chile also recorded one power play and one game-winning goal during November play.

The 26-year old forward enjoyed his most productive outing of the month on November 2 vs. Kansas City. In that contest, Farias posted three 2-point goals, a pair of assists and eight points in leading the Sockers to a 22-21 victory over the Comets. Farias recorded at least one point in all six of the November games in which he played and posted at least six points in four of his November outings.

Farias currently leads the MISL in scoring with 58 points and paces the League in both total goals with 18 and 3-point tallies with five. The 1996 Continental Indoor Soccer League Rookie of the Year also leads the MISL in sixth-attacker goals with four while sharing the League lead in assists with 13. Farias ranks second in 2-point goals with 15.

Taking The Cold Out Of December

The win last weekend was the first for the Sockers in the month of December. The team holds a 1-4 record in the 12th month.

Several Sockers Top MISL Leaderboard

With a two-point performance last weekend, Carlos ³Chile² Farias increased his lead in the Spalding Scoring Race to 62 points. He leads Milwaukee's Joe Reiniger by 11 points (49 points) and holds a 12-point advantage on Harrisburg's David Bascome and Kansas City's Dino Delevski (51 points). Farias is also second in the MISL with 15 assists while he is tied for the league lead in short-handed goals (one) with three other players.

Fellow teammate, defender Gaston Pernia has blocked 42 opponent shots in 18 games this season, putting him in first place in the MISL. Baltimore's Sean Bowers ranks second with 38. Pernia led the Sockers and the World Indoor Soccer League in blocks last season with 53 in 23 games.

Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg drops to third on the MISL's leading goalkeeper board with an 8.92 points-against average. Milwaukee's Victor Nogueira leads the list with a 7.94 points-against average.
