San Diego Sockers News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. The San Diego Sockers selected four collegiate players in the Major Indoor Soccer League Amateur Draft, held today via teleconference. Jacob Ward was selected in the territorial round, followed by Machel Millwood in the first round, Rob Friend in the third round and Todd Dunivant in the fourth round. The Sockers traded their second-round draft choice to Milwaukee earlier in the season for rights to Aaron Susi and Matt Johnson.

Jacob Ward, a defender with San Diego ties, finished his collegiate career this season with the Azusa Pacific cougars.

"Jacob had an outstanding high school career and I was fortunate to see him play last year when Azusa was in San Diego," said Sockers Head Coach Brian Quinn. "I believe that he can become a very good player if he gets enough practice with our team."

Machel Millwood, a forward from Towson University earned several post-season accolades, including first team All-South Atlantic and first team All-Colonial Athletic Association.

Rob Friend capped his stellar collegiate career as the first UC Santa Barbara player to be selected as an All-American in over 30 years.

"Machel and Rob are both big forwards who will be projects" said Quinn. "What I really like about them is that they are goalscorers and if they can transfer that to the indoor game they will be huge successes."

Todd Dunivant finished his 2002 campaign second on the team with 11 assists and totaled 15 points. He earned first team All-Pac-10 honors in 2001..
