San Diego Sockers News Release
The PASL San Diego Sockers have now won 31 consecutive games overall and claim their first of three possible championship trophies in 2012.
Ze Roberto scored two goals and Sockers goalkeeper Chris Toth stopped a fourth quarter penalty kick as the San Diego Sockers capped a four-day sweep of the FIFRA Club Championships with a 5-3 victory over the Monterrey Flash in the Grand Final.
The San Diego Sockers have now won 31 consecutive games overall and claim their first of three possible championship trophies in 2012.
San Diego played the final three games of the four-day tournament without PASL scoring leader and MVP Kraig Chiles, who suffered a strained MCL in his right knee during Thursday's 5-4 win over the Flash.
Trailing 3-2 in the third quarter on Sunday, the Sockers received an equalizing goal from Diego Rovira on a back post tap-in. Chiky Luna slotted home a rebound minutes later to put San Diego ahead for good, and Roberto's second goal of the game gave the Sockers some breathing room in the fourth quarter.
The SD Sockers killed Monterrey power plays in both halves including a fourth quarter penalty which began with a shootout penalty kick. Monterrey's Jorge Duran was stopped twice during the five second shootout by Toth, the son of Sockers Hall of Fame goalkeeper Zoltan Toth.
It was the finale to a remarkable four day stretch for the Fallbrook High grad, who started and played every minute of all four games.
Poway High's Eric Wunderle also scored for the Sockers, who return to PASL play on Saturday night at the Del Mar Arena when they play host to the Arizona Storm.
The Sockers will host the PASL Championships on March 9th and 10th in Del Mar and have already qualified for the final of the US Open Arena Soccer Championships.
