
Sockers Prepare for MISL Amateur Draft

(Westport, Conn., December 11, 2002) Â The Major Indoor Soccer League will hold its 2002 Amateur Draft on Tuesday, December 17. The draft will be held via teleconference and will begin at 2:00 p.m. EST.
The five-round event will open with a territorial round followed by four standard rounds of selections. Club¹s territorial picks must either be a permanent resident of the club¹s home state and played high school and/or youth soccer in the state, attended college for a minimum of two years in the club¹s home state or have been born in and played high school and/or youth soccer in the club¹s home state.
Recent MISL Amateur Drafts have produced a group of future MISL stars including P.J. Wakefield and Billy Nelson of Baltimore, Anthony Maher of Cleveland and Milwaukee¹s Sean Reti. Wakefield, who was chosen in the first round of the 2001 MISL Amateur Draft, leads all MISL rookies and ranks second on the Blast roster in scoring with 22 points. Nelson, selected by Baltimore with the team¹s first-round pick in the 2000 draft, was the 2001-02 MISL Rookie of the Year. Maher, chosen by Cleveland in the first round of 2001 event, has posted four goals in his first 12 games of League action. Reti, taken by Milwaukee with the club¹s territorial pick a year ago, registered seven points in leading the Wave to a 17-6 victory over Dallas on December 8.
Selection order for the draft is based on each club¹s winning percentage from their previous season of play. The Harrisburg Heat will pick first in each round of the draft. The Cleveland Force holds the number two position followed by the Baltimore Blast, Kansas City Comets, Dallas Sidekicks, San Diego Sockers, Philadelphia Kixx and Milwaukee Wave.
Cleveland has obtained the first-round picks of both Kansas City and Dallas through previous transactions. The Force received Kansas City¹s first-round selection in exchange for the playing rights to Chad James and Nikola Vignjevic. Cleveland was given Dallas¹ first-round pick in exchange for the playing rights to Beau Brown. The Force now holds the second, fourth and fifth picks (10, 12 and 13 overall) in the first round.
The Milwaukee Wave acquired San Diego¹s second-round selection in exchange for the playing rights to Matt Johnson and Aaron Susi. The Wave now holds the sixth and eighth pick (22 and 24 overall) in the second round.
The Major Indoor Soccer League is a single-entity organization featuring a coast-to-coast presence with eight teams located across the United States. The MISL is the single major league of indoor soccer, playing a 144-game schedule that began on September 28, 2002 and concludes on March 23, 2003.
