San Diego Sockers News Release
FINAL LEG OF I-5 CUP COMES TO ANAHEIM
For the fourth consecutive weekend the Sockers set out to play back-to-back games, first taking on their rivals the Bolts in Anaheim. San Diego returns home on Saturday to host Tijuana at the Del Mar Arena. This first edition of the "I-5 Cup" has been one-sided with three Sockers victories in three games, although the Bolts can look with regret at the first two results, in which Anaheim held a fourth quarter lead before fading.
BACK TO BACK AND BELLY TO BELLY
January is the busiest month on the schedule for the Sockers, with eight games in 22 days. San Diego is 6-0 so far through this difficult stretch of schedule, which includes five road games. The Sockers play back-to-back games every weekend in January, including a Saturday 7:05pm home contest against Tijuana.
ON THE LINE: SOCKERS WIN STREAKS
The Sockers have not lost a match of any kind since dropping an overtime 9-8 decision to the now-defunct California Cougars on December 27th, 2010. Since then, San Diego has won 25 consecutive matches overall, and 19 consecutive regular season matches in the PASL. In addition to their all-time record of 30-0 at the Del Mar Arena, the Sockers have won twelve consecutive road matches, including playoffs and US Open play.
INJURY UPDATE
Defenders John Krause (Achilles' tendon) and Dan Antoniuk (groin) will miss both games this weekend for San Diego.
SOCKERS HEADING TO MONTERREY
February will begin with a road tournament for the Sockers, as they will participate in the first-ever FIFRA Championships, an international tournament held in Monterrey, Mexico. The Sockers will be in the four-team field along with the Monterrey Flash of Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido, and teams from Canada and Ecuador. The tournament will be held from February 1st-4th.
NEXT MILESTONE AHEAD: CHILES 100
Defending PASL MVP Kraig Chiles is tearing up the league in his third season, leading the PASL in goals (35) and points (51). Chiles has already eclipsed his MVP regular season totals from last year (33g/12a/45p), and is on pace to break the league single-season records for goals (40) and points (68). In addition, Chiles has 96 regular season PASL goals, four shy of 100 for his career.
SUSI 500: CHECK!
Sockers captain Aaron Susi reached the 500 career point mark on Saturday with a goal and two assists against the Turlock Express. Susi will sit out Friday's match with Anaheim (illness) but is expected to play Saturday vs. Tijuana.
OPPONENT'S PROFILE: Anaheim Bolts
The Bolts have had two weeks to regroup after surrendering what is believed to be an indoor record 28 goals in a 28-7 loss in Tijuana. Anaheim has conceded 64 goals in its last four games, all losses. Rookie forward Rafael Gaytan is a pleasant surprise with 13 goals in six games.
