San Diego Sockers News Release
The Sockers' six-game home win streak ended Sunday night with a 7-5 loss to the Dallas Sidekicks at the Sports Arena. The second loss in three days dropped San Diego to .500 with a record of 8-8 and also moved them two games behind the Western Division leading Sidekicks.
San Diego's defense came out looking sluggish in the opening stanza allowing three Dallas goals in the period. Nick Stavrou got things started for the Sidekicks when he buried one past Sockers' goalkeeper Victor Nogueira at 6:30. Ricardinho added a second tally with a goal at 8:41. The assist was credited to rookie Shaun David. Jose Alvarado capped off the first quarter scoring with a hard volley into the back of the San Diego net off the pass from Martin Nash at 14:14.
The Sockers put a stop to the bleeding in the second quarter with two goals of their own to close the gap to 3-2 at halftime. Mariano Bollella scored his 11th of the season by launching one through the top left corner of the goal at 8:01. Sockers' defender Sean Bowers then fired a shot on goal that found the feet of David Beltran for the score at 10:17.
After a defensive struggle throughout most of the third quarter, Sidekicks' forward Shaun David was able to get one past Sockers'goalkeeper Nogueira at 12:53 to put them up 4-2. San Diego was able to answer right back when Nino DaSilva put in a pass from Bowers at 14:38, keeping them within one goal after three periods of play.
Dallas was able to pull away from the Sockers by scoring two early goals in the final quarter. Mark Rowland scored off an assist from Patrick Shamu at 2:30 and Kenny Bundy put one in at 6:34 on a great pass from Sinesa Alebic. Stavrou later scored his second of the night on a shoot out goal at 12:58. The shoot out was a result of Sockers' sixth attacker Mauricio Alegre taking down David from behind.
Paul Wright of the Sockers scored their lone goal at 14:05 of the fourth quarter with a sixth attacker on the field, but proved to be too little, too late.
Defensively Bowers lead the way for the Sockers with two blocks and goalkeeper Nogueira saved 11 of 17 shots faced en route to his eighth loss of the season.
The Sidekicks' win was their first in San Diego since December of 2001. It was only their fifth win in the last 17 games against San Diego since the 2001 season.
San Diego will host the Monterrey Fury on Friday January 9th at 7 p.m. It will be the third meeting of the season with the Sockers leading the series 2-0. The Sockers follow up Friday's game with a rematch against the Milwaukee Wave on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
