San Diego Sockers News Release
The Sockers will take on the Baltimore Blast, Saturday at 4:30 p.m., at the Baltimore Arena. The game is the first between the two teams this season and the 46th all time.
⢠The Sockers hold a slight 24-22 advantage overall in regular-season games.
⢠The Blast hold the series record in Baltimore, 14-9.
⢠The Blast lead the Sockers with a 8-6 record in overtime games.
⢠The Sockers hold a 230-201 advantage in goals scored, but have lost 13 of the 20 games decided by one goal. Last Game: San Diego 5 at Philadelphia 10 The San Diego Sockers will look to rebound from yet another dissappointing loss, this time to the Philadelphia KiXX. The Sockers fell to the Eastern Conference leaders, 10- 5, at First Union Spectrum on Wednesday.
⢠Leading scorer Chile Farias did not play due to an ejection that he received during the Nov. 16 game against the Milwaukee Wave.
⢠The game was only the second this season that Gaston Pernia did not register a block. The last was on Oct. 11 against Harrisburg.
⢠The five points scored by the Sockers was the second lowest for the team this season. There was a four-point total against Cleveland on Oct. 25.
With A Win
With a win against the Blast, the Sockers will jump back up to .500 and reclaim second place in the Western Conference. The will also stop the two-game losing skid that they currently hold.
Logging The Miles
Tonight's game marks the third game of a five-game road trip for the Sockers. The five straight road games will cover Milwaukee, Philadelphia (twice), Baltimore and Harrisburg. As the only MISL team in either the Mountain or Pacific time zones, the Sockers are about a three-hour plane ride from even their nearest competition and will log more air miles to the East Coast than even NBAand NHL teams, who don't face Eastern competition as often in their unbalanced schedule.
Watch For Streakers
The Sockers said goodbye to their longest winning streak of the season with the loss at Milwaukee. But have no fear, Chile Farias has kept his streak alive, nabbing points in every game he has played in this season.
Several Sockers Top MISL Leaderboard
With a six-point performace last weekend, Carlos "Chile" Farias increased his lead in the Spalding Scoring Race to 42 points. He leads Milwaukee's Joe Reiniger who moved into second place with 34 points. Kansas City's Dino Delevski is in third place with 33 points. Farias is also the MISL leader in assists with 10 while he is tied for the league lead in short-handed goals (one) with three other players.
Fellow teammate, defender Gaston Pernia has blocked 30 opponent shots in nine games this season, putting him in first place in the MISL. Baltimore's Jason Dieter ranks second with 22. Pernia led the Sockers and the World Indoor Soccer League in blocks last season with 53 in 23 games.
Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg tops all MISL net-minders with a 7.10 points-against average, just ahead of Milwaukee's Victor Nogueira (7.59).
East Meets West
The Sockers will be glad to return to California and the Western Conference. The team is 0-4 against Eastern Conference teams this season.
