Boston Breakers News Release

NEEDHAM, MA (March 13, 2003) - The Boston Breakers actually kicked the ball around at Nickerson Field for the first time this preseason in the morning but had to call off the afternoon session due to the snow. Breakers head coach Pia Sundhage has conducted preseason practice indoors at Fore Kicks in Norfolk, MA since the team began training on March 1st for the 2003 WUSA season

The Breakers have faced a number of distractions during preseason but none worse than the weather. Last Thursday, the players trudged through the snow to train indoors at Fore Kicks. Today, the snow struck again. The team will return to Nickerson Field tomorrow and train from 10 a.m.-to-noon and then again at 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

First Exhibition Match

The Breakers will open the preseason with an exhibition match against the New York Power on Saturday, March 15th at Jess Dow Stadium on the campus of Southern Connecticut State at 6 p.m. The Breakers will travel to Connecticut in the afternoon with a squad of 15 players. Missing from the roster is Kristine Lilly, Kate Sobrero, Angela Hucles, Karina LeBlanc, Dagny Mellgren, Ragnhild Gulbrandsen and Stéphanie Mugneret-Beghe.

The Breakers will be able to get some quality time for their 2003 draft selections. All four rookies - Devvyn Hawkins, Marcia Wallis, Kelley Worden and a little local flavor as UConn's Sarah Popper will be in uniform and ready to play in their first official WUSA preseason match. The match also gives Sundhage a good look at the veterans and how quickly they are adjusting to the new system.

"We have a long way to go but I'm happy with the way the young players are developing and the way the other players have taken to our defensive ideas,'' said Sundhage on the development of her new team.

Tickets for the exhibition are $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for children under 18 years of age. For information, call the Southern women's soccer office at 203-392-5759.
