Smokies Win Series With 9-1 Win Over Jaxx

KODAK, TENN. (JULY 31, 2010) - The Smokies (21-14) won their third straight game against the Diamond Jaxx (15-20) on Saturday night at Smokies Park, 9-1. The Smokies took the series with the victory, taking three of the first four games of the series. The Jaxx finished the month of July with a 10-14 record, which is their first month under .500 this season. Matt Lawson's 10-game hitting streak also ended on Saturday night. The Diamond Jaxx dropped to six games back of Tennessee in the North Division.

Russ Canzler and Robinson Chirinos had two hits each, including a homer and three RBI's apiece in the Smokies win. Tony Campana, Blake Lalli and Brandon Guyer joined them with two hit nights. Brett Jackson led their 15-hit attack with a 3-for-4 night at the plate. The Jaxx were led by Nate Tenbrink, who tallied his second consecutive multi-hit game, finishing 3-for-4.

Chris Archer (5-1) gave up his first earned run in 32 innings in Double-A in the top of the fourth inning. Archer got the win and battled his way through five innings, using 101 pitches. Archer struck out six and walked four in the outing. Steven Hensley (7-9) suffered the loss in his shortest outing the season. The righty, from Asheville, NC went just 2.2 innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits.

Tennessee again on Saturday scored first. Tony Campana opened the bottom of the first with a walk and subsequently stole second. Brett Jackson doubled in Campana to make it 1-0. Robinson Chirinos plated Brett Jackson with a single, which pushed the lead to 2-0. With two outs, Brandon Guyer plated Russ Canzler with a single to finish off the three-run first inning. The Smokies led 3-0.

The Smokies added to their lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Robinson Chirinos hit a two-run homerun to put the Smokies up 5-0. Tony Thomas had an RBI in the inning as well. The Smokies went up 7-0 after the third inning.

The Jaxx loaded the bases against Archer in the fourth and scored a run on a bases loaded walk to Carlos Peguero. The Jaxx stranded the bases loaded in the fourth and trailed 7-1 after the fourth.

The Diamond Jaxx and Smokies wrap up their five-game series on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 CDT at Smokies Park. The Jaxx will send out RHP Jarrett Grube (2-3, 2.44) and the Smokies will counter with RHP Rafael Dolis (1-2, 3.74).
