Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, TN - The Smokies defeated the Barons 7-6 in walk-off fashion on Sunday night at Smokies Stadium. The Smokies came back from a six-run deficit, and Trent Giambrone walked it off in the ninth inning with a single.
Down 6-0, the Smokies cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zack Short walked and Yasiel Balaguert reached base on an error. Ian Rice walked to load the bases and Eddy Martinez came through with a run when his sacrifice fly scored Short.
In the bottom of the fifth, the tide turned as the Smokies offense woke up. Two singles from Charcer Burks and Giambrone and an error that put Connor Myers on base, loaded the bases for Short. Short delivered with a ground rule double that cut the lead to 6-3. Balaguert followed that up with a double of his own that scored two and made it a one run game. Rice tied the game with a single that scored Balaguert.
In the bottom of the ninth with the score still tied at six, the Smokies walked it off. Burks singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Giambrone wasted no time ending the game as he singled home Burks to give Tennessee the win.
Thomas Hatch started for the Smokies and struggled early on. Hatch finished the game going five innings, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out three. Preston Morrison replaced Hatch in the sixth inning and pitched better, going 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out one. Daury Torrez got the final out of the seventh inning and then pitched two more scoreless innings while striking out two.
The Smokies and Barons will finish out their series on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Smokies Stadium. Tennessee will send Michael Rucker to the mound as he looks to earn his eighth win of the season. Rucker has yet to give up an earned run in the month of July. The Barons will counter with Tanner Banks who is looking for his first win in Double-A.
