Smokies Take Two From Birmingham

Hoover, AL- The Smokies (2-1) Sweep a doubleheader from Birmingham(1-2) on Saturday, 2-1 in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap.

Matt Craig drove in both run for Tennessee in the first game with a homerun over the right field wall. Craig's shot followed Matt Camps one out single in the fourth snapping a string of ten straight batters retired to start the game.

Mitch Atkins pitched well in the start going four innings to earn the win. Atkins pitched four innings, yielding just one run and five hits. Michael Cooper retired the last three outs to record the games save.

Game two was controlled by Tennessee from the top of the first inning. Tyler Colvin started the two-out rally with an infield single. Matt Craig drew a walk pushing Colvin to second. Ryan Harvey then lined a single to centerfield that scored Colvin from second. Barons centerfielder Miguel Negron slipped in the wet grass fielding the ball and Craig was able to score as well. Kyle Reynolds then singled in Harvey and Chris Robinson double him home. Birmingham second baseman Victor Mercedes booted a grounder from Robinson Chirnos and Chris Robinson then scored.

Jeff Samardzija cruised back of the five run top of the first. He pitched five innings giving up only three hits and one run. Samardzija compiled 76 total pitched with three innings where he retired the side in order. He was reward by snagging his first win of the season.

Greg Reinhard pitched a perfect sixth and seventh with three strikeouts to lock down the doubleheader sweep.

Donnie Veal is scheduled to start the Sundays game for skipper Buddy Bailey the Barons will counter with Justin Cassel. Tennessee will return home on Wednesday, April 9th for the teams home opener against Jacksonville. Tickets are available at 286-2300.
