Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - After smacking just one extra base hit in the first two games of this series, the BayBears knocked four doubles in tonight's 5-3 loss to the Carolina Mudcats. Cameron Maybin was the highlight reel for the Mudcats (3-0) as he launched his second home run of the season in the fourth inning and broke a 2-2 with a two-run triple in the eighth.
Hector Ambriz started for the BayBears (0-3) and was impressive through seven innings as he parted with a no-decision while allowing just two runs on four hits. Ambriz was given the lead to work with in the third inning as he helped himself by starting a rally with a double down the third base line. The next batter, Greg Thomson, knocked Ambriz home with a single to give Mobile their first lead of the series.
The lead didn't last long as Maybin delivered a tying solo shot in the fourth while Brad Davis put Carolina on top, 2-1, with an opposite field blast in the fifth. The Mudcats have homered five times so far in the first three games of this series.
The BayBears scratched their way back in the seventh after an infield hit by Yunesky Sanchez. Two batters latter, Thomson lined a double into right-center field, which allowed Sanchez to score the tying run. Thomson, however, was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple and the threat ended there.
In the eighth, Carolina reclaimed the lead on Maybin's two-run triple off reliever Matt Elliott (0-1). The BayBears got one back on a John Hester sac fly in the bottom of the eighth but left the tying run on third after Sanchez grounded out to short on a good play up the middle by Manuel Mayorson. The Mudcats tacked on one more in the ninth as Lorenzo Scott bounced into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Tood Doolittle (S, 2) nailed the save in the bottom of the ninth with a perfect inning as he helped reliever Willie Glen (1-0) earn the victory.
The BayBears are home again tomorrow afternoon as they look for their first win against the Mudcats at 2:05 p.m. Call 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
