Knoxville Smokies News Release
Kodak, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (28-21) hit three home runs for the second consecutive night as they defeated the Birmingham Barons (18-31) 10-5 Friday night at Smokies Stadium in the fourth game of the series.
First baseman Matt Mervis got things started again for Tennessee, as he hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Smokies a lead they never relinquished. In the third, Chase Strumpf hit the Smokies' second three-run homer of the night off Birmingham starter Kaleb Roper (L, 0-4). Strumpf's blast was his team-leading tenth of the season, and he finished the night with four RBIs.
Designated hitter Bryce Ball capped the night with Tennessee's third three-run blast of the contest, and the Smokies had scored double-digit runs by the end of the fourth, more than enough run support for Max Bain (W, 1-2) who settled in nicely after allowing a first-inning run. Bain struck out four batters over five innings of two-run ball.
The Smokies can clinch a series win over the Barons Saturday night at Smokies Stadium in the fifth game of their six-game set. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET when the Smokies will send RHP Peyton Remy (3-0, 7.29) to the mound against RHP Scott Blewett (2-2, 3.70) Fans can listen to the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
