Knoxville Smokies News Release

Montgomery, AL - The Smokies rose to the Biscuit's challenge to earn a 6-5 win at Riverwalk Stadium on Saturday night. The crowd of 6,501 saw Montgomery (3-3) load the bases twice in the contest only to see Tennessee (3-3) escape unscathed.

The Smokies' bullpen held the Biscuits at bay long enough to help Tennessee earn a split in the series. Jake Muyco (2-1) earned the win allowing one run and scattering three hits. Brian Schlitter worked a hairy ninth inning to take home his North division-leading 12th save.

Tennessee stormed out of the gates with an early 2-0 lead off Biscuits' starter Jeremy Hellickson. Jim Adduci got the Smokies going with a one-out single. Doug Deeds followed with a walk. Marquez Smith singled both home after a wild pitched advanced both runners.

After the slow start, Hellickson found his groove and ended up pitching five innings for Montgomery, with the two runs being all the Smokies could muster from the right-hander. He struck out six for the second time, allowing four hits and walking one.

The Biscuits earned their first and only lead when they plated two in the fifth inning off Smokies' starter Jay Jackson. Jackson was chased from the game after only 4.2 innings. The right-hander allowed three runs resulting from five hits and an uncharacteristic four walks.

The lead was short-lived, however. Tennessee rallied with a one-out double from Doug Deeds who scored on a single by Tyler Colvin. After a Smith single, Blake Lalli walked to load the bases. Back-to-back singles by Ty Wright and Mark Reed gave the Smokies a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Montgomery drew to within one with when Drew Anderson crossed home in the seventh. Darwin Barney's third homerun in the top of the ninth proved to be the difference.

Anderson's first homerun provided the final margin.

Tennessee returns to Smokies Park on Sunday to face Huntsville. The Stars are the AA-affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The series will last six games, spanning June 28-July 3. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, by calling (865) 286-2300 or by visiting smokiesbaseball.com.
