Knoxville Smokies News Release
Pensacola, Fla. - The Tennessee Smokies (32-30) fell for the fifth straight night to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (33-24) 5-3 Saturday night at Blue Wahoo Stadium in Pensacola.
The Smokies scored first for the first time this series against Pensacola's starter Jeff Lindgren (W, 1-1). After the first two batters reached, Matt Mervis drove in both runners with an RBI double, the only time the Smokies scored in the top of the first this series. Lindgren settled in nicely after the opening frame, allowing just one other run on a Jake Slaughter solo homer, as he worked six quality frames and struck out nine batters en route to the win.
After falling behind early, the Blue Wahoos jumped on Tennessee's starter Riley Thompson (L, 0-2) in his first start off the Development List since May 5. Thompson recorded only one out in the first before he was knocked out of the game after allowing a pair of two-run homers. Reliever Chris Clarke worked 5.2 shutout frames in relief of Thompson which kept the Smokies in the game, but they could not complete the comeback, as they lost by three runs or less for the fifth time this series.
The Smokies will conclude their 12-game road trip Sunday evening as they hope to salvage a game from their six-game set against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Blue Wahoos Stadium featuring Admiral Fetterman Field in Pensacola. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. ET when the Smokies send RHP Ryan Jensen (0-1, 4.91) to the mound against RHP Cody Mincey (3-2, 5.20). Fans can listen to the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
Smokies Stadium will host Hope at Bat Night and Henry Rowengartner Night on their next homestand, starting June 21. For tickets, fans can call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
