Smokies drop 2nd in a row to Stars 7-2

Sevierville, TN - Under wet and very windy conditions, the Tennessee Smokies dropped their second straight decision to the Huntsville Stars by the score of 7-2. Tennessee dropped to 15-22 on the season with the loss, with Huntsville improving upon their best record in the Southern League.
Huntsville once again got off to an early offensive start off of Smokies starting pitcher Donnie Veal (2-2). After pitching a scoreless first inning, Veal surrendered two runs in the second followed by three runs in the third. Veal was hurt by a wind blowing hard out to right field all night, as Chris Erracart turned what should have been a routine fly ball to right into a two-run home run to give Huntsville a 2-0 lead. The Smokies were tagged with another wind-aided three run home run in the 3rd, this time off the bat of Stars left fielder Cole Gillespie.
The Smokies struck back in the bottom half of the third with two runs to pull to within 5-2. Tennessee benefited by two RBI singles, one from Jake Fox and the other off the bat of Ryan Harvey, to cut the lead to three. Both runs were charged to Stars starting pitcher Derek Miller (4-1).
But that would be all the Smokies offense could muster, as Miller and the Stars bullpen combined to just two hits over the next six innings. Robinson Chirinos had the only multiple hit night for the Smokies, going 2 for 4 with two singles.
Tennessee continues their series against Huntsville on Monday night with first pitch at 7:15 pm at Smokies Park. The Smokies will send righ-hander Mark Holliman (0-0, 9.00) to the mound to face off against Huntsville left-hander David Walch (4-1, 4.21). The series will continue through Wednesday afternoon.
