Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham, Ala. -- The Birmingham Barons plated two runs in the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx by a 3-2 score Sunday afternoon in Birmingham. With the win, the Barons (20-17) were guaranteed to maintain at least a two-game lead in the Southern League's South Division.

Both starting pitchers were superb keeping the opposing offense at bay. West Tenn starter Jeff Dorman allowed just four hits through the first six innings, but a Cole Armstrong leadoff home run in the seventh finally ended the shutout and gave the Barons a 1-0 edge. The Diamond Jaxx (23-14) could manage nothing off Barons starter Kyle McCulloch, who turned in his finest performance of the year with six shutout innings, scattering six hits, walking none, and fanning six. But after being blanked the first seven frames, West Tenn grabbed the lead in the eighth against the Barons bullpen, as Jon Link surrendered two runs on a pair of hits and a pair of walks.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Barons knotted the score on a Robert Valido triple and a Miguel Negron sacrifice fly. After a pair of singles, Thomas Collaro lobbed a soft single down the left field line, scoring Ricardo Nanita and giving the Barons the 3-2 lead. Joe Winkelsas allowed a two-out hit to the Diamond Jaxx in the ninth, but earned his first save as a Baron.

The two teams will be back in action Monday at 7:05, as Birmingham's Justin Cassel (2-2) will oppose West Tenn's Dennis Stark (NR).
