Sliders Start Road Trip With Extra Inning Win Over 1st Place Rex

The Springfield Sliders knocked off the Terre Haute Rex 10-9 in 10 innings tonight at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, IN to even the season series between the two teams at four games apiece. The Rex got on the board first tonight with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but it could have been more as LF Mike Fitzgerald threw out Michael Schroeder out at home plate to end the inning. Fitzgerald then led off the second inning by hitting a towering home run to left field, his eleventh of the year. Later in the inning, the Sliders would add another run after an RBI single by 1B Reagan Fowler scored 2B David Kerian who had doubled. The Rex would tie it with a run in the fourth, but the Sliders took the lead right back in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on three doubles. Fowler started the inning with a double, CF Wade Rothermich then hit an RBI double, and SS Michael Hurwitz brought Rothermich in with an RBI double of his own. The Rex then picked up one in the bottom of the inning, cutting the Sliders' lead back to one at 4-3. The Sliders added three in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout by Fowler and a two out two run single by C Conner Dunn. The Rex would cut the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth, but Matt Tellor's twelfth home run of the year, restored the Sliders' four run advantage in the ninth. However, the Sliders' bullpen could not hold the lead, and a three run homer by Michael Eberle with two outs tied the game and sent it into extra innings. In the top of the ninth, Tellor came through again for Springfield, hitting a single to right to score Rothermich from third to take the lead. LHP Justin Hunsaker came on in the bottom of the tenth and pitched out of a jam to earn the save and secure the victory. The Sliders and Rex will be back at it again tomorrow. The game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 ET.
