Sliders Jump Out To Early Lead But Cavemen Rally Late

July 26, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders lost the opener of their series with the Hannibal Cavemen tonight 8-4 at Clemens Field in Hannibal, MO. The Sliders scored the game's first runs tonight as RF Mike Fitzgerald hit a first inning home run for the second straight night, this one a two run shot, putting the Sliders ahead early 2-0. The Sliders would add another in the fourth as Fitzgerald drew a walk, and eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout by 3B Sean Gerber. The Cavemen would score their first runs of the night in the bottom of the fourth, when two Sliders' errors led to two unearned runs in the inning, cutting the lead to 3-2 after four. Those would be the only two runs that Sliders' starter Zach Wendorf would give up, as he went 6 innings, giving up just 4 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts. He left with the lead, however, the bullpen couldn't hold it for him, as Hannibal took the lead with two in the seventh. The bullpen struggles continued in the eighth as Hannibal scored four more runs, putting their lead at 8-3 going into the ninth. With one out in the ninth, the Sliders did get one run back as CF Ryan Aper hit his second home run of the year, but that is all they would get in the final frame. Hannibal and Springfield will wrap up their season series tomorrow at 6:35. The game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
