Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders kicked off a five game road trip tonight with a 13-9 loss at QU Stadium in Quincy, IL. It was the Gems who got on the board first, scoring a run off of the Sliders' Cody Repenning in the very first inning. SS Michael Hurwitz would tie the game for the Sliders with an RBI double in the second inning, but walks and a few Sliders' errors helped the Gems score five runs to regain the lead at 6-1. The Sliders would cut into the lead with a run in the third, and another run in the fourth. In the third, it was 1B Matt Tellor hitting a solo home run to right field, his sixth of the season. In the fourth, Hurwitz picked up his second RBI of the night on a single that drove in CF Ryan Aper who had reached on an infield single. The Sliders would then tie things up after 2B David Kerian hit a three run home run, his second in as many days. The Gems would answer right back with seven in the bottom of the fifth, getting help from some Sliders' errors along the way. Springfield cut the Quincy lead to five with two runs in the seventh when Aper was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give him a painful RBI, and then Sean Gerber hit a pinch hit sacrifice fly for the second run of the inning. The Sliders would make it interesting in the ninth as C Matt Stevens hit a line drive home run to cut the lead to 13-9, and then the next three Sliders all singled, loading the bases with just one out. However, the Gems brought Seth McWilliams out of their bullpen to strikeout the final two Sliders' hitters, to end the Sliders threat of a comeback. With the win, Quincy now leads the season series 4-1. The Sliders and Gems will meet again tomorrow in Quincy, with first pitch set for 6:35. The game will be broadcast on the Sliders' Ustream channel.
