Alabama Slammers News Release

PELHAM, Ala. – The Alabama Slammers will be looking for their first win in franchise history as they face the Orlando Seals this Friday night at 7:05 pm at the Pelham Civic Complex. The team will be without head coach Garry Unger, who will be a celebrity speaker in Saturday's Heritage of Hockey Classic in Edmonton, Alberta, which will help the Edmonton Oilers and the National Hockey League mark milestone anniversaries and feature the first outdoor game in NHL history.

Slammers Assistant Coach and former Birmingham Bull star, Frank Beaton will take over coaching responsibilities until Garry returns to the bench on Sunday for the team's road game in Lakeland.

"We've had a couple of weeks to work on things and the guys are anxious to get a win in front of the home crowd on Friday," Unger said. "I know that Frank will have the guys fired up and ready to play come game time."

Orlando (1-1) started off the WHA2 season last Saturday, beating Lakeland 4-2. Orlando's B.J. Stephens scored the fastest goal in WHA2 history and Mark White scored the game winning goal only 6 seconds into the third period.

The Slammers (0-1-1), led by center Doug Lawrence (1g, 1a), and defenseman Bobby Quinnell (2a) will be playing again without forwards Jeff Cheeseman and Mark Donahue. Cheeseman was placed on the 14-Day Injured Reserve by the team and Donahue on the 7-Day Injured Reserve. With Cheeseman and Donahue on IR, the Slammers have acquired veteran forward Paul Vincent through a trade with Lakeland in return for Slammers forward Justin Schaves.

"We're looking forward to having Paul in the line-up this weekend. With his size and offensive capabilities, he is going to be very difficult to defend against. He's an exciting player to watch and I think the home fans are in for a treat on Friday evening," Coach Unger added.

After the Orlando game, the Slammers will depart for the team's first ever road trip when they travel to Macon to face-off against the Trax on Saturday, November 22nd before wrapping up the weekend with a game in Lakeland on Sunday against the Loggerheads. Both games start at 6:05 p.m. and can be heard live online at www.irn.fm.

Fans can purchase individual game tickets in person at the Pelham Civic Complex box office, at any Ticketmaster location, Charge by Phone at 715-6000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. The first 1,000 fans on Friday will receive a pair of Slammers Cheer Stix, sponsored by Coca-Cola. Fans will also receive a $6.00 discount on their ticket purchase by presenting their Iron Bowl tickets at the box office on game day. For group tickets, season tickets and birthday parties, fans can call the Slammers office at 328-PUCK.
