Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL) - The Slammers continued their 2012 Frontier League preseason campaign on Monday night at Silver Cross Field with a 5-2 win over the neighboring Schaumburg Boomers. With the victory, the Slammers are 3-0 against the Boomers in the 2012 preseason.
Joliet busted the game open in the bottom of the first inning when Erik Lis, who belted 20 home runs in 2011, sent a two-run home run sailing over the right field wall, bringing around Abel Nieves from first.
Behind 2-0, the Boomers got on the board in the fourth. After loading the bases with no outs, Frank Pfister punched a shallow fly into center, cutting the lead in half. Raphael Turner tied it in the next at-bat, bringing home Andrew Cohn from third on a deep sacrifice fly into right-center.
Joliet took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when a Sean Estand RBI single scored Zach Mandelblatt. Brad Netzel singled immediately afterward to load the bases, but Trevor Willis grounded into a double-play to end the inning, saving the Boomers from further injury.
The Slammers extended the lead in the sixth: Erik Lis grounded into a double play, but brought home Nieves from third in the effort, extending the lead to 4-2.
Amalio Diaz entered to pitch for Joliet in the ninth and set Schaumburg down in order to earn the save. However, as it was an exhibition game, the teams opted to play a full nine innings. In the bottom of the ninth, with the game already won, Nieves belted a homer into the Bud Beach area beyond right field to make it 5-2.
Joliet burned through six pitchers in the contest, and starter Steven Maxwell tossed the first four frames, surrendering only 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 3 and walking just 1. Chase Doremus was credited with the win, while Dave Whigham was credited with the Schaumburg loss, although he gave up only 1 run.
The Slammers wrap up their preseason schedule Tuesday night in Normal against the CornBelters. Fans can listen to the action live at 7:05pm on the team's UStream account at http://www.ustream.tv/jolietslammers.
