Slammers Ink Former CHL All-Star

PELHAM, Ala. – The Alabama Slammers announced today that forward Doug Lawrence has been signed to a contract for the upcoming 2003-04 season.

A native of Richmond, British Columbia, Lawrence comes to the Slammers after spending the majority of his 14-year professional career playing for the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League (CHL). In 744 professional games he has recorded an impressive 251 goals, 888 assists and 2,568 penalty minutes.

The 9-time Central Hockey League All-Star has won three championships in his career, including one with the Tulsa Oilers under current Slammers Head Coach Garry Unger.

"Dougie is a fiery competitor that will provide tremendous leadership for our younger players," said Slammers Head Coach, Garry Unger. "He is a proven winner who knows what it takes. Dougie also brings a rare combination of not only being one of the top scorers in the league, but has also amassed a lot of penalty minutes with his physical playing style."

In one of his most impressive seasons as a professional, Lawrence recorded a career high 27 goals, 100 assists, and 250 penalty minutes playing for the Tulsa Oilers during the 1996-97 season.. His 100 assists established a Central Hockey League record for most assists in a single season. In total, Lawrence has reached 100 points in four different seasons.

"Dougie's the type of player you build your team around," said Slammers President, Taylor Hall. "He makes everyone around him a better player and the fans will be amazed with his electrifying style of play. We are fortunate to have Dougie be apart of our program."

Lawrence will be the Slammers Player/Assistant Coach this season under Coach Garry Unger.

The Slammers open the 2003 - 2004 campaign at home at the Pelham Civic Complex on Friday, November 7th against the Jacksonville Barracudas. The Slammers will also face the Lakeland Loggerheads, Macon Trax, Miami Manatees, and Orlando Seals in the inaugural season of the World Hockey Association 2 (WHA2). All games will be broadcast on www.irn.fm.
