Alabama Slammers News Release

PELHAM, Ala. – In what turned out to be a pretty feisty contest, the Alabama Slammers dropped the first game in franchise history Friday night, as Chris Harper's two goals led the Jacksonville Barracudas past the Slammers 5-2 in front of a sold out crowd at the Pelham Civic Complex.

Harper's first goal of the night, assisted by Kory Baker and Chad Gromek 14:33 into the first gave the Barracudas the initial lead of the evening. However, it took Alabama just 41 seconds to get the equalizer, as Doug Lawrence filed home Bobby Quinnell's pass out of the left corner at 15:14, evening the game at 1-1.

Jacksonville would gain a two goal advantage in the second. Baker scored from Mark Phenow at 7:09, and then Harper's power play goal, his second red light special of the night, coming at 12:28, put the Barracudas up 3-1. The home team would draw within one at the end of two, as Ryan Prentice, assisted by Jeff Coulter at 19:08, brought the Slammers within 3-2.

Jacksonville would put the game away with two goals in the third. Lyle Steenburgen scored unassisted at 4:30, then Phenow scored from Kory Baker and Joe Seroski on the power play at 13:52, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Barracudas. Jacksonville out shot Alabama 29-28 on the night. Brandon Snee made 26 saves for the Barracudas, Fred Beaubien had 24 saves for the Slammers. Jacksonville converted 2 of 8 power play opportunities, while Alabama went 0 for 5 with the extra man.
