Bellingham, WA - Caleb Gervin led all scorers with 34 points in his first game since returning from the All-Star Game as the Bellingham Slam coasted to a 128-80 win over the Los Angeles Aftershock in an American Basketball Association game Tuesday night at Whatcom Pavilion.
The Slam used a consistent effort throughout the game, holding the Aftershock to no more than 22 points in any quarter. Following a 6-5 Los Angeles lead at the 9:50 mark of the first quarter, the Slam never trailed again after going on a 22-4 run over the next seven minutes.
Bellingham maintained their pressure into the second quarter, outscoring Los Angeles 31-22 for a 63-42 lead at halftime. Gervin scored 21 of his 34 points in the first half.
In the second half, the Slam held the Aftershock to 38 points to further distance the two teams. Gervin led six players in double figures, with Brandon Hartley scoring 19 and Craig Roosendaal adding 18. Darwin Carter led Los Angeles with 13 points.
Gervin's 34 points came following a grueling two days of travel from the All-Star Game in Florida on Saturday. Due to airline delays and cancellations stemming from the Northeast snowstorm over the weekend, Gervin and All-Star teammate Mike Parker were stranded overnight at Houston's airport and arrived in Bellingham just hours before tip-off.
The Slam improved their record to 15-11 with their third straight win while the Aftershock dropped to 11-13. The win was the Slam's first over the Aftershock in three tries this season. Back in November, the Slam opened the season with two close losses to the Aftershock in Los Angeles.
The Slam and Aftershock face off for a rematch on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion. Following that game, NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway and the Florida Pit Bulls come to town for two games on Sunday, February 19 and Tuesday, February 21.
