Bellingham Slam News Release
SEATTLE - Mike Parker's 37 points were not enough as the Bellingham Slam ended a season-long six game road trip with a narrow 124-121 loss to the King County Royals on Friday in American Basketball Association action at North Seattle Community College.
The Slam's road trip, in which the team went 2-4, took them though eight states, four time zones, and two countries. The Slam last played at home on February 1.
Friday's game, which closed out their regular season series with King County, was a physical back-and-forth affair which featured 25 total lead changes. Despite the loss, Bellingham won the season series five games to two.
After Bellingham took a ten point lead with two minutes left in the first half, the only time either team led by double digits in the game, King County scored ten of the quarter's final 12 points to trim Bellingham's lead to 64-62 going into halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams play very evenly, with King County only able to trim their deficit to one, at 95-94, going into the final period.
The Slam were able to open up the fourth quarter by scoring the first five points, and maintained their lead until the latter stages of the quarter. With the Slam leading 113-108 with four minutes to play, the Royals scored the game's next eight points to establish their first lead of the quarter, at 116-113.
After Parker nailed a jumper and a pair of foul shots on the Slam's next two possessions to put Bellingham back on top at 117-116 with 1:56 to play, Tim Ellis nailed a go-ahead three-pointer on the Royals' next trip down the court. Not to be outdone, Scott Freymond drove to the basket seconds later to tie up the game for the Slam, at 119-119, with 1:29 to play. On the Royals' next trip down, Jamie Booker converted a three-point play to put King County ahead by three on what would be prove to be the game's winning basket.
The Slam did have a shot to tie the game at the buzzer, but were unable to get a decent look from three-point range.
Parker's 37 points, to go along with 11 rebounds, paced five Slam players in double figures. Brandon Hartley added 25 points while Freymond contributed 14.
Ellis led five Royals players in double digits with 34 points, while Randy Green was not far behind with 30. Kyle Keyes contributed a double-double with 26 points and 14 assists.
