CBA 1 Continental Basketball Association 1

Skyrockets select Dayshawn Wright first

September 26, 2006 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release

ALBANY, NY (Sept. 26, 2006) - With the first pick of the 21st Annual Continental Basketball Association College Draft, the Minot Skyrockets selected forward Dayshawn Wright (6-6, 232) from Syracuse University.

Wright, a Syracuse, New York native, is an early entrant to the CBA Draft. Wright averaged 1.3 points and 1.3 rebounds in only 5 minutes of play in 10 games in his only season with the Orange, in 2004-05. Wright sat out the 2005-06 season after being declared academically ineligible. Wright was ranked in the top 50 high school players as a senior, playing for perennial high school power Oak Hill Academy. His team, led by Wright and 1st round draft pick Josh Smith, was undefeated, 38-0, and ranked number 1 in the country in 2004. Wright averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks a game for Oak Hill. He participated in the 2003 USA Men's Basketball Youth Development Festival averaging 17.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.8 steals per game, shooting .618 from the field.

"Dayshawn is a diamond in the rough," said Minot Head Coach Chris Daleo. "He is someone that has fallen through the cracks and I think he will surprise some people. I have had great success with finding players like Sidney Holmes and Kenyon Gamble. These are players that no one was aware of and they became important parts of my teams in Rockford. I feel that Dayshawn will be another one of those guys that will come in and be a vital part of what we are doing here in Minot."

Wright was excited about being tabbed the No. 1 overall pick and hope to continue his collegiate success onto the professional level.

"I would first like to thank the Minot organization for taking me with the first pick overall," said Wright. "I want to come into camp and show coach and everyone in Minot that they made the right choice taking me number one overall. I am the type of player that will play hard every possession and puts the team first. I can't wait to get started and help bring a championship to Minot."

The CBA recently completed its 60th anniversary season on March 27 with the Yakama Sun Kings defeating the Gary Steelheads in a best-of-three-game series. That series featured the CBA's 2006 Player of the Year, Anthony Goldwire (Sun Kings), and the CBA's 2006 Coach of the Year, Jaren Jackson (Steelheads).
