The Sussex Skyhawks have officially released their 2008 schedule, with the opener scheduled for Thursday, May 22, 2008.
Skyhawks fans' will see a much different Can-Am League than they did in 2008. The North Shore Spirit, New Haven County Cutters and the Can-Am League road team, the Can-Am Grays, will no longer be part of the league. However, the addition of a new franchise in Ottawa, Canada will give the league a even 8-teams, creating a balanced schedule, in turn, resulting in 47 home games for the Skyhawks.
"The changes for the Can-Am League this off season are very positive", commented Skyhawks General Manager Ben Wittkowski. "For the league, to add a franchise in a market of 1 million plus people, in a AAA level stadium, is wonderful; for the Skyhawks, to have a balanced schedule, with a real favorable lineup of home games is a real positive for us also".
Wittkowski continued, "Losing a number of Monday night games and adding more weekend games is very exciting for us. For two years, we have faced a real challenging schedule - with multiple Monday games and an extreme amount of games during the early part of the season when school is session, made it tough".
This season, the Skyhawks will have 13 home games prior to June 26; whereas, during the 2007 season, the Skyhawks hosted 21 home games in that same time frame. In addition, the Skyhawks will only have 3 Monday night games, opposed to 6 in 2007.
Skylands Park will continue to be the site of the best fireworks shows in New Jersey. The Skyhawks will host 10 incredible firework shows this season. All games with a post game fireworks show will begin at 6:35 pm. Firework nights will take place on May 23, June 27, July 3, July 4, July 11, July 25, July 31, August 14, August 21 and the 10th show will take place during one of the Skyhawks home playoff games.
Wittkowski noted, "Firework shows have been a tremendous success for us; we fully intend to make the playoffs this season, and that 10th fireworks show will quite an exciting evening". "He added, "we are final negotiations with a manager and player procurement director, and I assure you that the additions of these people to our organization will make our community extremely proud of this professional baseball team we put on the field".
The Skyhawks promotional schedule will be released over the course of the next months. "We have put together some good promotions over the course of the last two seasons, " noted Wittkowski. "Those promotions have focused on community outreach and groups, this season, we intend to grow on our cornerstone promotions and implement more unique themes and events that I think the fans will enjoy."
