Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - After not recording a hit through the first five innings, the JetHawks exploded for six runs in the sixth inning and held on for a series clinching victory, 8-3 over the High Desert Mavericks on Monday afternoon at The Hangar.
High Desert (31-21) starter David Ledbetter (1-5) retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced, the lone blemish being a one-out walk to Johnny Sewald in the third.
Ledbetter ran into trouble right away in the sixth, however. Sewald singled on the first pitch, the first hit of the game for Lancaster (24-25). Kristian Trompiz followed with an RBI double off the bottom of the wall in left-center. Bobby Boyd was next and he tied the game with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season. After a walk to Garrett Stubbs, Ledbetter was pulled from the game.
Josh Blanco entered and the Mavericks left-hander walked both Ramon Laureano and Brooks Marlow to load the bases before being pulled himself. Nick Gardewine was summoned to face Bryan Muniz, who came through with an RBI ground out to put the JetHawks in front for good. Two batters later, Antonio Nunez delivered a two-run single, his first two runs batted in since being called up from Low-A Quad Cities.
Johnny Sewald hit his first home run with the JetHawks in the eighth to pad the lead, a two-out two-run blast. Andrew Thome (1-0) earned his first win with Lancaster in his second appearance. He pitched four shutout innings to close out the game and struck out five.
Thome helped turn the momentum of the game in favor of the JetHawks in the top of the sixth inning. He was brought on to replace starter Brock Dykxhoorn with runners on the corners and nobody out. The right-hander struck out Tripp Martin looking and induced a 3-6-3 ground ball double play off the bat of Michael De Leon.
The JetHawks travel to San Jose on Tuesday night for a doubleheader. The first game is a suspended contest from April 8 that will be picked up in the top of the fifth inning with the JetHawks leading 4-1. The second game will be seven innings. First pitch is 5:30 p.m. Alex Winkelman (0-0) and Matt Bower (0-1) are scheduled to start for the JetHawks.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
