Birmingham Barons News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - In what was a tie ball game heading in to the bottom of the fifth, Barons starter Thaddius Lowry was not able to get an out in the frame as the Mobile BayBears squeezed across six runs and sent twelve men to the plate in the inning. Lowry and Scott Snodgress struggled to get an out in the sequence, as all 6 runs scored before a single putout was recorded. It took four outs to get through the inning, as a drop third strike allowed another run to score in what was an inning to forget.
Prior to the fifth, the BayBears put tallies on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first in the form of a bases loaded double by Mobile catcher Jose Briceno to score Michael Hermosillo and David Fletcher. Hunter Jones was able to record an outfield assist to end the inning after a lineout to the centerfielder caught Briceno sleeping at second, and was put out by Eddy Alvarez covering the bag.
Birmingham evened the game up in the top half of the fifth after back to back singles from Mason Robbins and Hunter Jones put runners on first and second, only to be advanced to second and third respectively courtesy of a Cleuluis Rondon sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. Newcomer Toby Thomas recorded his first RBI with the Barons on a groundout to short and put the road team on the board for the first time. Chris O'Dowd directly followed Thomas with a single to left, scoring Jones from third before O'Dowd was put out at second trying to stretch it into a double to end the inning.
Mobile tacked on another insurance run in the eighth inning off reliever Aaron Bummer, who gave up the lone run in two innings of relief on four hits and three punchouts. The Barons added two runs in the top of the ninth, but the comeback was cut short after Eddy Alvarez grounded out to first with the bases loaded in an inning which featured a walk, followed by three straight base hits and a fielding error before the game ending groudout.
Lowry took the loss for Birmingham to move to 2-3 and raised his ERA to 8.16 on the season. Jake Jewell went 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and got the win for the BayBears to move to 3-2 this year.
The Barons will be back in Birmingham beginning Tuesday against Chattanooga after an off day tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT on May 30th. Right-hander Matt Cooper will be on the mound for the Barons and RHP Fernando Romero will get the ball for the Lookouts. Curt Bloom will bring you all the action starting with the Coca-Cola pregame show starting at 6:55 p.m. on WERC 105.5 FM and the iHeart Radio app.
