Greeneville Astros News Release

Kingsport, TN - Although the final score was not an indication, the Greeneville Astros (6-8) defeated the Kingsport Mets (6-8) in a hard-fought game for the second consecutive time on Thursday night at Hunter Wright Stadium. After the Astros took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth, the Mets rallied back to force extra innings. Then, the Astros got a six-run burst in the tenth to walk away with a 12-6 win.

As a team, eight Astros hitters had at least one RBI and seven scored at least one run. The 12 runs scored by the team set a new season-high and pushed the Astros to 2-0 in extra-inning games.

Individually, Astros' shortstop Juan Santana had a memorable night as he went four-for-six with a double, a homerun, two stolen bases, and scored five runs to set a Greeneville Astros all-time record.

Early on, the Astros took a 1-0 lead on a Jacob Nottingham sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to bring Santana home for the first time. However, the Mets came back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on a wild pitch and a Eudor Garcia RBI single. Then, in the second, they added to their lead with a Jean Rodriguez RBI single.

Over the next five innings, the Astros took control with two runs in the third, two more in the fifth and one in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. During that span, Santana scored three more runs which included a solo homerun in the seventh inning.

In the eighth inning, the Mets began to rally and managed to close the gap with another Rodriguez RBI single and an Oswald Caraballo sacrifice fly. However, it was the bottom of the ninth, with one out, when Ivan Wilson tied the game at 6-6 with a solo homer that sent the game into extra innings.

The Astros began the 10th inning with a leadoff single by Santana. Then, after a Sean McMullen single, Yonathan Mejia made it three hits in a row with his RBI single to score Santana for the fifth time of the night and give the Astros the lead.

Now up 7-6, the Astros poured it on. Connor Goedert, Bryan Muniz and Jason Martin each added RBI singles while Ydarqui Marte hit a sacrifice fly to score Luis Reynoso and Muniz scored on a wild pitch. That doubled the Mets score to effectively end the game.

Astros right-hander Aaron Greenwood, who pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on three hits with one strikeout, picked up the win.

Following eight games on the road in nine days, the Astros will return home to face the Mets at Pioneer Park on Friday, July 4th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm with the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration presented by Landair and Marsh Propane immediately following the game. In addition, Laughlin Memorial Hospital will be passing out Independence Day-themed Astros T-shirts prior to the game while supplies last.
