Mariners Take Series from Bristol

July 4, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release

The Pulaski Mariners proved that yesterday's win was no fluke by recreating the feat with a 6-3 victory over the Burlington Pirates. Pulaski's offense continued to show signs of awaking from the slumber that fell over their bats with six runs on six hits.

Patrick Peterson started the game on the mound for Pulaski. Peterson found himself in trouble in the first inning. He labored with two runners on, and threw over twenty pitches in the frame. The Pirates were unable to produce anything out of the inning, but they did chase Peterson-he left after the first inning due to the high pitch count.

Bristol drew first blood in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by designated hitter Nick Buckner, but Pulaski responded in a big way in innings four and five.

The Mariners hung three on the board in the fourth inning. Arby Fields led off the inning with a walk, and reached second on a botched pickoff attempt. Rafael Fernandez bunted Fields to third base where he would score on an error by the shortstop. Two more Mariners would score following a squib single down the third base line.

Fields was in the middle of the action throughout the contest. He went one-for-two with a double and two walks.

"I pride myself on my ability to get on base" Fields said. "Everyone knows that I'm going to try to steal once I get on base. I respect Rob a lot because he lets me be myself out there."

The Mariners' bullpen did its job, and held the Pirate bats in check in relief of Peterson. Rohn Pierce (1-0, 4.32 ERA) pitched 2.2 innings en route to his first win of the season. Pierce worked around one single and one walk, and he struck out three.

Peter Miller closed out the game, and earned the save for his contributions. Miller went two innings and allowed a lone baserunner with two outs in the ninth inning.

Now that they have returned to the winning track, the Pulaski Mariners hit the road for a four game, two series road trip. Pulaski plays one game in Bristol before traveling to Kingsport.
