Mariners Rediscover Winning Ways
July 4, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release
Winning ways finally returned to Calfee Park as the Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the Bristol Pirates 7-4. The Pirates threw themselves out of the gaming by giving Pulaski seven free chances by way of errors.
"The errors really helped us out" manager Rob Mummau said. "We put a lot of pressure on them on the base paths. We hadn't scored a lot of runs recently, so we made a commitment to be aggressive."
The Mariners owned the base paths Thursday night. Pulaski racked up seven stolen bases, and forced two throwing errors by catcher Daniel Arribas.
Pulaski got off to a rough start when throwing errors by the Mariners allowed the Pirates to score two runs in the top of the first inning. Gianfranco Wawoe's throwing error gave Bristol's Pablo Reyes second base. Later Reyes and Arbet scored Bristol's first runs of the evening on a passed ball by Wayne Taylor.
Despite their troubles in the beginning of the game, the Mariners turned it around in the bottom of the fourth inning. A good hit and a Pirates error landed Wayne Taylor on third base, and a base hit by Carlton Tanabe drove in Taylor for Pulaski's first run of the night. A sacrifice fly by Yordi Calderon sent Estarlyn Morales home and put Tanabe on third. Jay Baum's single brought Tanabe home for the Mariners' fourth and last run of the inning.
Troy Scott pitched 5 innings for the Mariners allowing 6 hits, 3 unearned runs, and 0 earned runs. Pulaski was not particularly sharp on defense themselves. They committed four errors which led to three unearned runs.
Estarlyn Morales excelled at the plate for Pulaski. The left fielder went one-for-three with a walk and three runs scored.
"I felt good at the plate, made adjustments, and hit the ball well" said Morales.
The previous five games had seen unceasing frustration for the Mariners. A league-wide day off on Wednesday allowed Pulaski players to clear their heads and erase the previous five games' results.
"It was good to get away from the game for a day" said Mummau. "We were able to hit the reset button."
The reset worked wonders and led to the return of happiness in the Mariners' clubhouse.
Pulaski takes the field Friday afternoon to settle their series with Bristol. The Independence Day matchup begins at 4pm.
