Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - In front of a packed crowd of 2,821 fans, scouts, coaches, and fellow players, six Newport Gulls put their talent on display at Sunday's NECBL Home Run Derby and All-Star Game right at home at Cardines Field.

Bryce Hulett was the first Gull to take the field as the Newport representative in the Home Run Derby, flexing his muscles with ten long balls.

Sam Cochrane was next for the Gulls, leading off for the South All-Stars and playing in center field. The back-to-back NECBL All-Star broke out at the plate with a 3 for 3 day, including his first triple of the summer.

Five other Gulls would enter the game. Kellan Tulio pitched a scoreless top of the third, picking up a strikeout. Dawson Brigman came in at second and picked up a base hit in the eighth. Spenser Smith joined Brigman in the middle infield at shortstop and made a jumping grab in the seventh. Grant Umberger pitched the eighth for the Southern All-Stars, putting a zero on the board and picking up a strikeout himself.

The Gulls (16-14) return to the diamond tomorrow for a make-up game at Muzzy Field against the Bristol Blues (9-19). First pitch is set for 6:30pm.
