Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Vince Harrison had four hits and Alain Quijano threw the second complete game of his professional career as the Schaumburg Flyers rolled to a 13-2 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats Monday night at Alexian Field, snapping the âCats six-game win streak.
Quijano (3-2) allowed only three hits over the first six innings and gave up only two seventh inning runs to beat his former team. The left-hander struck out seven and walked one, allowing nine total hits. The RailCats got their runs in the seventh when Jordan Czarniecki and Jeff Beachum collected back-to-back doubles, and Mike Rohde drove in both runs with a line drive single.
The Flyers used the longball to give Quijano plenty of early support, starting with a solo shot from Harrison in the second. Schaumburg grabbed another run in the third, then tagged Tom Thornton (7-4) for three in the fourth on Jeff Dunbar's fifth longball of the year. Felix Jose hit a three-run home run of his own in the fifth to make the score 8-0 and essentially end the RailCats night.
Thornton allowed eight runs on nine hits over six innings but did record a career-high nine strikeouts. Thornton's loss was his first in his last eight starts, dating back to June 9 in Winnipeg. The big left-hander had won five consecutive decisions and lost for the first time in three games against the Flyers.
Czarniecki and Mike Massaro each went 2-for-4 to lead a nine-hit RailCats attack, while five of the nine Flyers starters had at least two hits. Harrison went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, Jose and Dunbar each had four RBI and Richard Mercado went 3-for-4. The Flyers scored 13 runs on 15 hits after scoring three runs on 13 hits in the previous three games - at U. S. Steel Yard against the RailCats - combined.
The loss snapped the RailCats season-long win streak and was just the âCats third in 16 July games. The RailCats are still 9-2 since the All-Star Break and 16-4 in their last 20 games, and even with the loss the RailCats remain in a tie with the Winnipeg Goldeyes atop the Northern League standings.
The RailCats (33-25) and Flyers (27-29) continue their four-game series Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Alexian Field. Garret Holleran (0-1, 1.80 ERA) will make his third start for the RailCats against Schaumburg right-hander Ed Almonte (4-6, 5.13 ERA). That game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: The RailCats four losses in their last 20 games have each been by at least seven runs and by a combined 39 runs ... the loss was just the fifth for the RailCats in 32 games against Schaumburg, dating back to the start of the 2008 season ... Quijano made five relief appearances for the RailCats in May and June before being released ... Massaro is now 9-for-17 with five doubles in the four games against Schaumburg this week ... before the game the RailCats placed reliever Aaron Cook on the disabled list, retroactive to July 15. Cook fractured his tibia chasing a ground ball in the RailCats July 15 win over Kansas City.
