Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - Alain Quijano tossed the second complete game of his career and the Flyers erupted for 15 hits in a 13-2 walloping of the RailCats Monday at Alexian Field. The win snaps a five game skid for the Flyers, and comes a day after the RailCats completed a three-game weekend sweep of the Flyers.
Vince Harrison got the scoring going with a solo homer in the second off Gary starter LHP Tom Thornton. Tony Mansolino drove home another run with a sac fly in the third, scoring Richard Mercado who had led off the frame with a single.
After Victor Ferrante and Harrison knocked back-to-back singles to begin the fourth, Jeff Dunbar drilled a three-run homer to left to make it 5-0. Felix Jose would drive a three-run bomb of his own an inning later, scoring Travis Brown and Harrison, who had both singled.
Gary would finally scratch runs out against Quijano in the seventh. Jordan Czarniecki and Jeff Beachum each dropped bloop doubles to right, and both came around to score on Mike Rohde's one-out single cutting the Flyers' lead to 8-2. The inning would end one batter later when Quijano got Anthony Esquer to bounce into a double play.
The Flyers weren't done. Mansolino and Brown singled in front of a Ferrante walk in the bottom of the seventh, and Harrison nestled his fourth hit of the day along the right field line to plate two on a double. Dunbar drove in Ferrante with a single, and Mercado brought home Harrison with a base hit of his own to balloon the advantage to 12-2.
Schaumburg added one more in the eighth, with Travis Brown drawing a one out walk an scoring on a Jose single to reach the 13-2 final. The 11-run winning margin is the largest for the Flyers this season.
Harrison finished 4-5 with three RBI and four runs scored to lead the way for Schaumburg. Brown, Jose, and Dunbar each had two hits a piece, with Jose driving in three and Dunbar four.
Mike Massaro and Czarniecki both collected two-hit nights for the Cats.
Quijano (3-2) fired first-pitch strikes all night long, allowing two runs on nine hits, and walking only one while striking out a season-best seven. The loss goes to Thornton (7-4) who allowed eight runs on nine hits in six full innings.
RHP Ed Almonte (4-6, 5.13) throws for the Flyers with RHP Garrett Holleran (0-1, 1.80) opposing for the RailCats tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
