Six Blue Bombers Named To East Division All-Star Team

WINNIPEG, MB - Six Winnipeg Blue Bombers players, including four on defence, were named to the 2008 CFL East Division All-Star team on Monday.

Running back Fred Reid, offensive tackle Dan Goodspeed, defensive tackle Doug Brown, defensive end Gavin Walls, halfback Kelly Malveaux and linebacker Zeke Moreno were all selected by way of 41 voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) representing eight CFL markets and a national chapter as well as the eight CFL head coaches and CFL fans from across the country.

Reid earned his first all-star honour in only his second season in the league. The 26-year-old out of Mississippi State finished second in the division in rushing with 101 carries for 709 yards and three touchdowns. He ended 2008 with 1,395 combined yards.

Goodspeed, who was named the team's top offensive lineman and is a favourite to be the East nominee for top honours, earned all-star accolades for the second straight year. The fourth-year Blue Bombers veteran started all 18 regular season games this season.

Brown, who is up for three major league awards as the Bombers nominee for most outstanding player, top defensive player and best Canadian, earned his fifth division all-star nod. The eight-year Winnipeg veteran finished the season with 43 tackles and six quarterback sacks.

Walls earned his third-straight division all-star selection after being tied for the East lead in quarterback sacks (10). The fourth-year man out of Arkansas also had 56 tackles.

Malveaux was Mr. Versatility for the Blue Bombers in 2008, playing safety, halfback and linebacker to earn his second division all-star award. Malveaux recorded two interceptions, six pass knockdowns, forced a fumble and had three tackles for loss. He finished the season with 65 defensive tackles and a sack.

Moreno, acquired by Winnipeg on September 9 in a trade with Hamilton, made an immediate impact with the Blue Bombers. The second-year CFL'er finished the season as the league's top tackler (97) and had three quarterback sacks. This is the second consecutive East Division All-Star award for Moreno.

The East and West Division nominees for the Gibson's Finest CFL Awards will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
